Cloth diaper update

Hey Friend's and Family,

I know some of you have been wondering: "So has she given up yet? Has she quit?" Well nope! We are still cloth diapering. I'd say about 95% of the time right now. As I think I mentioned We used disposables in the hospital and until her umbilical stump came off. That took us through two packs of newborn diapers and now we have an emergency stash of size ones for when we are out and about and run out of cloth. This happened last time we went to the pediatrician and she pooped 3 times while we were there! We also used them for a day when I was sun bleaching out the stains from her diapers. So for those curious of the cost so far for our cloth diapers here it is!:

Now strictly what we are using at THIS moment (not what we have waiting in the drawers for when she gets bigger):

6 newborn sized cloth diaper covers: $60
2 dozen newborn sized prefold GMD diapers: $50
2 packs babyganics disposable newborn diapers size: $20
1 pack babyganics disposable diapers size 1: $10 and I've only used half so really only $5
1 dozen small (yellow edge) prefold GMD diapers: $29 (I do have 2 dozen more of these but haven't used them yet)

So for the first 8 weeks the total cost to diaper Teagan has been $164

and for those of you wondering the utility increase with cloth diapering: My electric bill has actually been less these last two months then last year.. so $0 for that. My water bill went up a wapping $0.87!  The big difference is my gas bill, now its not exact because it has been COLD here, I have had my heat set MUCH HIGHER to keep the house warm for Teagan so it is significantly more expensive then last year ($70) but I would say just on the side of DIAPERS (they do have to be washed in a HOT water cycle, and my dryer is a gas dryer) it's probably around $20?

So total for 8 weeks is around $185  which is about $20 a week. It's still too early to compare with disposable diaper costs to do a cost savings comparison (the savings will increase the longer the time goes by without having to purchase disposable diapers)

Now for the stash I have (the whole of it) for cost:

$60 - 6 newborn Rumparoos covers
$50 - 2 doz NB sized GMD prefolds
$87 - 3 doz Size Small GMD prefolds

$197 so far spent by us that will cover Teagan's diapers for at least the first 6 months (not including the disposable emergency diapers.. but I'll keep track of those purchases and update later!)

Now until she is two or out of diapers we will need to purchase other diapers. Since the All in Ones are so expensive and Teagan is doing so well on the prefolds we will be purchasing more of those and using the all in Ones we have for sitters or overnight diapers.

What we have already:
Free - 1 one size bum genius pocket diaper (gift)
$50 - 5 bumpkins pocket diapers

What else we need to purchase:
$90 - 6 OS Rumparoos covers (I'll probably purchase more because they come in so many fun colors!)
$74 - 2 doz Size Med GMD prefolds
$80 - 2 doz Size Large GMD prefolds
$244 still to spend

So possibly a total of $491 spent on diapers over a 2-3 year time! Not bad considering the cost to diaper with only disposables. (If you want the break down on those check out my diaper posts under the WHY tab or click HERE)

Coming later this week: 8 week update! I'll be doing an eight week photoshoot for Teagan tomorrow so once I get them edited I'll be posting some of the pics!
